Note: if you look in the distance of the cover photo, you can see the Hull Bridge on the Hull River (hence, Kingston upon Hull).
Today is my one week anniversary to arriving in the United Kingdom, and my week has been pretty packed! Here's everything that I did my first week in the UK! As of now, my Recs & Reviews and Photos pages are pretty up-to-date with my latest adventures.
Day 1: I arrived in Manchester at 8:00 AM and headed out via taxi to Hull around 11:00 AM. It was a two hour drive, so I was able to see the countryside and experience riding on the opposite side of the road for the first time. Around 1:00 PM, I was dropped off in front of my accommodations, checked in, and headed to my room to unpack. It didn't take me long to unpack, so afterwards I took a shower and headed to the on-campus pub, Wetherspoons for dinner. I had never been to a pub before, so it was an interesting experience. I went to bed around 5:00 PM and was out for pretty much the rest of the night.
Day 2: I woke up around 11:00 AM. I had hardly slept between Greenville and Hull, so I was happy to finally get some sleep. When I woke up, I checked out some of the on-campus events for the rest of the week and booked tickets for them. I then decided to head out around campus and see what I could find. I stumbled across the business schools and talked to some helpful people along the way. I also tried Costa Coffee for the first time! That evening, I met my flatmates and they invited me to the on-campus club, Asylum, with them. It was fun to meet new people and get some general info about what was happening on campus. I got in about 1:00 AM and was asleep by 2:00 AM.
Day 3: Today, Hull had a bus going to Trinity Market. This was one of the events that I had registered for, so I got ready to head out into town for the first time. We were in Old Town Hull for the whole afternoon and into the evening looking at all of the shops, enjoying some food, getting coffee, seeing art, visiting a church, and getting to know each other. I met a group of girls from Germany and we hit it off decently well. After getting back from Trinity Market, I looked into some of my classes and started updating the travel blog. I did laundry, finished my book, and was asleep around midnight.
Day 4: The Hull Business School held an event for business students to meet with local companies. It was from 9:45 AM to 5:00 PM and there was meet-and-greet session, a consultation project, and a couple of guest speakers. After this event, I hung out with my flatmates for a bit before grabbing dinner and working on a marketing project.
Day 5: I finally ventured into the city to get a SIM card for my phone (because international plans are very expensive) and grabbed lunch at an Italian restaurant in the shopping center. I took some time to explore and see all of the different shops before heading into Tesco for the first time. I got some of the final things I needed to make my room as comfy as possible and ran into the friends I had made on my trip to Trinity Market! We rode the double-deckered bus back to campus before headed our separate ways. That evening, I reviewed my schoolwork and started familiarizing myself with the classes I was taking.
Day 6: I went out to explore campus a bit more before I went to a couple of dance classes with my new friends. Dance is not my thing, and these classes proved it, but I had fun. Once I got back, I finished up some readings and an assignment for my first class the next day and worked a bit more on my website.
Day 7: First day of class! I started my day with a lecture, headed to finalize my enrollment and get my new and improved student card, and then went to a workshop. After my workshop, it was 5:00 PM so I went and got a celebratory dinner and drink at Wetherspoons before coming back to my room to do more things to help prepare me for the school year.
Now that classes have officially started, my schedule is changing weekly (because that's another thing - your schedule isn't the same every week) and I'll finally be able to adjust to life as a student at the University of Hull. Stay tuned as I continue on with my study abroad adventure!
